Hospice was first introduced in this country when Dame Cicely Saunders, who was in the process of establishing St. Christopher's inpatient hospice in London, visited Yale University in 1963. Her lecture on the concept of holistic hospice care to medical students, nurses, social workers, and chaplains included photos of terminally ill cancer patients and their families that dramatically showed the differences between before and after symptom control. This contact set off the followinging chain of events, which resulted in the development of hospice care as we know it today. Link til den historiske udvikling i Amerika
